Commercials are the most common and accessible form of video. The impact of image is one of the most important factors of a commercial because it needs to attract viewers effectively within a limited amount of time of only several tens of seconds. Commercial directors have employed various techniques, sometimes along with experimental visual effects and innovative video technologies, and have tried to create fresh image. One of the sources of ideas in producing commercials is movie. At the same time, visual expression of commercials has also influenced movies. For example, it is well known that masters of the cinema field such as Kon Ichikawa and Seijun Suzuki demonstrated their unique aesthetics in the arena of commercials as well. Many excellent movie directors emerged from the commercial world, such as Nobuhiko Obayashi and Jun Ichikawa of Japan as well as Ridley Scott, David Fincher, and Michael Bay in Hollywood. Supported by five major companies in Japan that agree with the “Laugh & Peace” concept of the Okinawa International Movie Festival, the CM Competition invites widely from professionals through amateurs commercials that give sharp impression of assigned products, and submitted works are judged on their originality. Chairman of the award committee is Shinya Nakajima, a leading commercial director in Japan. Nameko Shinsan, a cartoonist and columnist famous as a TV watcher, and Yuichi Kimura on behalf of comedians (Geinin) serve as members of the award committee. We are looking forward to new talents that even give impact on the cinema world.
